A good example of community centered adaptation in Pakistan is the flood early warning system in Charsadda, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. This system was developed after severe floods affected the area in 2010. The local community worked with NGOs and the government to install simple river level monitoring stations and mobile alert systems.
The plan reflects community values because local people were involved in deciding where the sensors should be placed and how alerts are shared. It addresses challenges by giving families enough time to move to safer places during floods. The system also considers vulnerability, as it prioritizes households in the most flood-prone areas. Conflicts were resolved by holding community meetings to agree on alert procedures. Overall, the system meets community needs, helps protect lives and crops, and strengthens the adaptive capacity of the community against future floods.
