Crafting and Reviewing Smart Objectives. Case Study (Rural Community, Northern Bangladesh)

Step 1: General Adaptation Goal

Improve the resilience of the rural community to frequent flooding and reduce damage to homes and crops.

Step 2: Refine into a SMART Objective

Specific – What exactly will you do?

Construct small-scale flood protection measures e.g., raised seed beds, drainage channels, and elevated storage areas and train households on climate-resilient farming and flood preparedness.

Measurable – How will you track progress?

Track the number of households trained, the number of flood-resilient structures built, and reduction in crop and property losses during flood seasons.

Achievable – Is it realistic with available resources?

Use low-cost local materials, community labour, and local government support, making the project affordable and practical.

Relevant – Does it address the key climate risk?

Yes. It directly addresses flooding, which is the main threat to livelihoods and food security.

Time-bound – When will it be completed?

Within 18 months.

Final SMART Objective (Rewritten)

Train 200 households in flood-resilient farming practices and construct raised seed beds, drainage channels, and elevated storage for five flood-prone villages in northern Bangladesh to reduce crop and property losses by at least 30% within 18 months.
