Nature Based Solutions for disaster risk reduction

In India, cyclone, floods, drought, landslides, heatwave related hazards are common. The climate change has severally impacted the frequency and occurrence of these events.

The coastal areas face the greatest impacts as the cyclones hit the coastal villages and population first. The fishing communities living on coasts are the most affected by these events. These communities livelihood depends on the fishing, therefore they live along the coastline. Their houses are thatched and being from socio economically weaker section, they are mostly uneducated and has limited resources to cope with such hazards.

With the help of the local administration and early warning, the families relocate temporarily to overcome these challenges and cope with the event. This saves lives and their resources.

Further the mangroves plantation in coastal areas contribute significantly in reducing the impact of the cyclone and thunder and prevent the losses. This nature based solution is very useful barrier for the coastal communities.

The local self government bodies and NGOs support the community. The support includes shelter, food, water, medical assistance from external stakeholders.
