Flood-Resilient Farming in the Awash River Basin, Ethiopia
In the Awash River Basin, communities have developed flood-resilient farming systems to cope with seasonal flooding that damages crops and livelihoods. The project involves building raised planting beds, small embankments, and community-managed irrigation channels, all designed with local farmers’ input.
My reflection:
Represents community values: Incorporates traditional knowledge of flood patterns and crop rotation.
Addresses challenges: Reduces crop loss from floods and improves water management.
Adequately assesses vulnerability: Combines local observations with hydrological data to target the most at-risk areas.
Demonstrates conflict resolution: Farmers collectively decide on water allocation and maintenance responsibilities, reducing disputes.
Meets community needs: Ensures stable crop production, food security, and livelihood protection.
Contributes to adaptive capacity: Builds skills, strengthens social cohesion, and improves long-term resilience to flooding.
