Discussion Forum Contribution: Vulnerabilities, Lessons

Discussion Forum Contribution: Vulnerabilities, Lessons Learned, and Reflection

During the virtual excursions, I identified several major vulnerabilities in the regions explored, including flooding, coastal erosion, mangrove degradation, and loss of livelihoods. These vulnerabilities are also present in my country, Benin, particularly in riverside areas along the Ouémé River and coastal zones such as Cotonou. These regions are highly exposed to the impacts of climate change, including recurrent flooding, soil salinization, and ecosystem destruction.

The video testimonies from community members helped me understand that local populations are not only victims but also active agents of solutions. For instance, mangrove restoration, observed in areas like Kpomassè, is an effective strategy to reduce erosion, protect biodiversity, and strengthen community resilience. I also learned that local knowledge and community solidarity play a critical role in adaptation.

During the text-based role-playing game, I chose to prioritize sustainable solutions, including ecosystem restoration, community awareness, and investment in preventive measures rather than short-term fixes. These choices were influenced by the understanding that nature-based solutions are more sustainable and provide long-term benefits. The game allowed me to better grasp the complex decision-making challenges faced in climate-vulnerable contexts.

This module taught me that climate adaptation requires an integrated approach, involving communities, governments, and organizations, to build a more resilient future.
