Community-Centered Adaptation in Uttar Bedkashi Union

Uttar Bedkashi Union:

Example: Community-managed embankment reinforcement and mangrove restoration project.

Community Values: The plan respects local knowledge and traditional practices, such as planting mangroves along riverbanks and elevating homesteads.

Challenges Addressed: Flooding, cyclone damage, salinity intrusion, and livelihood vulnerability.

Vulnerability Assessment: Local volunteers and Union Parishad officials conducted risk mapping and identified the most flood-prone and salinity-affected areas.

Conflict Resolution: Regular community meetings ensured disputes over resource allocation and land use were mediated collaboratively.

Meeting Community Needs: The project improved protection for homes and agricultural land, increased safety during cyclones, and provided alternative livelihoods like fish farming and mangrove-based products.

Adaptive Capacity Contribution: Strengthened local disaster preparedness, combined traditional and scientific knowledge, and enhanced resilience to climate risks for households and the wider community.
