Climate Change Impacts in Northern Nigeria: Drought and Flooding
In Nigeria, particularly in the Northern region, climate change affects daily life through irregular rainfall and flooding. Rainfall has become shorter and less predictable, which directly harms agriculture, the main source of livelihood for many communities. Farmers now plant crops with uncertainty and often face poor harvests due to long dry spells. These conditions reduce food supply, raise market prices, and place financial pressure on households.
Flooding also threatens many communities in Northern Nigeria. Although intense rainfall contributes to floods, human actions worsen the problem. Many residents dump waste into drainage channels, blocking the flow of water. When rain falls, water spills into homes, roads, and farmlands, damaging property and disrupting movement. Flooding also increases health risks, especially the spread of waterborne diseases.
