Community-Centered Adaptation

Metsimotlhabe Climate-Smart Agriculture Project, Botswana

In Metsimotlhabe, a community-centered project introduced solar-powered irrigation and hydroponics to strengthen climate-resilient vegetable production. The initiative included training for women and youth in climate-smart agriculture, income-generating activities, and technical support from government and NGOs.

Reflection:

Community values: Aligns with local priorities of food security and livelihoods.

Challenges addressed: Reduces vulnerability to water scarcity and rainfall variability.

Vulnerability assessment: Targets key climate risks for the semi-arid region.

Conflict resolution: Inclusive participation fosters shared benefits and reduces potential disputes.

Community needs: Provides practical benefits food, income, and skills.

Adaptive capacity: Builds skills, technology use, and diversified livelihoods for long-term resilience.

 

This project demonstrates how community-centered planning and low-cost, locally relevant solutions can effectively enhance adaptive capacity in resource-constrained setting
