Reflections on Stakeholder Mapping and Collaboration

Effective strategies and tools for stakeholder identification and mapping:

  • Stakeholder mapping matrix to assess power and influence of stakeholders.

  • Identifying stakeholders based on their roles, responsibilities, and level of involvement in the project.

  • Determining each stakeholder's interests, potential benefits, and contributions to understand how they may affect or be affected by the project.

  • Engaging with local communities and incorporating local knowledge to ensure that important stakeholders are not ignored.

How negotiation and communication skills can help manage conflicting interests among stakeholders:

  • Encouraging open communication and active listening to understand different perspectives.

  • Understanding power dynamics among stakeholders and bringing balance to them.

  • Building trust through regular consultation and transparent decision-making.

Best practices for ensuring inclusive and sustainable collaboration over time:

  • Representation of vulnerable groups (e.g. women, children, people with disabilities)

  • Capacity building and skill development of community members

  • Accessibility of resources, services, and technology

Example: Cyclone Preparedness Programme (CPP) in Bangladesh, where government agencies and the Bangladesh Red Crescent Society work together with local volunteers to improve disaster preparedness. Community volunteers, including women, receive training on early warning dissemination, evacuation, and emergency response.
