Refining Adaptation Goal “Improve Community Resilience to Floods for Communities in Western Kenya“ as a SMART Objective
SMART Objective Approach
-----------
Specific:
Establish and train 5 community-based flood preparedness groups to implement low-cost measures such as early warning systems, drainage clearing and household-level flood-proofing.
Measurable:
Track progress by monitoring through number of groups formed, capacities built and community members trained.
Achievable:
Leverage local government support, NGOs, and community volunteers to implement low-cost, labor-based solutions that do not require heavy financial investment.
Relevant:
Directly addresses the key climate risk of frequent flooding by strengthening community capacity to prepare, respond and reduce damage to homes and crops.
Target & Time (Bound):
-5 community groups engaged.
-Percentage of households adopting at least one flood-proofing measure (target: ~60%).
-Reduction in reported flood-related damages to homes and crops (target: ~30% decrease compared to baseline).
-Complete the establishment and training of community groups and achieve measurable household adoption of flood-proofing measures within 24 months of occurrence (by December 2026).
-----------
Final SMART Objective Statement: “By December 2026, establish and train 5 community-based flood preparedness groups in Western Kenya; enabling at least 60% of households to adopt low-cost flood-proofing measures; and reducing flood-related damages to homes and crops by 30% compared to baseline”.
