Example of a Successful CBA/LLA Practice in My Community

In my community in Abuja, local farmers have long relied on rainwater harvesting and traditional soil conservation techniques to cope with irregular rainfall and flooding. This practice addresses the challenge of water scarcity during dry seasons and soil erosion during heavy rains.

Community Engagement: Decisions about where to dig retention pits, plant cover crops, and maintain terraces are made collectively during village meetings, with elders and farmers sharing knowledge passed down through generations.

Outcomes/Impacts: These methods have improved crop yields, reduced soil loss, and increased water availability for household and agricultural use. They also reinforce community cohesion through shared responsibility.

Traditional Practices: Indigenous knowledge includes planting drought-resistant crops, rotating farms to let soil recover, and using natural mulches. These practices are still widely used but are sometimes supplemented with modern fertilizers or irrigation systems.

Connection to Traditions: These practices are deeply tied to local values of stewardship of the land and respect for natural cycles, reflecting a cultural identity centered on sustainability.

Integration into LLA: Under a Locally-Led Adaptation framework, these practices could be combined with modern weather forecasting, small-scale irrigation technology, and training programs, with funding and decision-making controlled by local committees rather than external donors.

Barriers: Challenges include migration of younger people to cities, limited government support, and pressure to adopt intensive, external-input farming methods.

Successful Integration :Some NGOs have successfully supported these communities by providing technical guidance for rainwater storage while allowing farmers to decide how to implement the techniques, respecting local knowledge and agency.
