Community-Driven Climate Adaptation in Jaunpur, Uttarakhand

The “Building Climate Resilience of Forest-Dependent Communities” initiative in Jaunpur block, Uttarakhand, provides a clear example of how adaptation strategies can be rooted in community priorities, local knowledge, and participatory planning.

Reflecting Local Values

The project focused on livelihoods directly linked to forest resources, including fuelwood, fodder, and non-timber products. Community members were actively engaged in decision-making, ensuring that interventions aligned with both cultural practices and economic needs.

Addressing Key Challenges

Communities faced deforestation, unpredictable rainfall, and soil erosion. The initiative implemented afforestation campaigns, soil conservation methods, and water harvesting systems to address these environmental pressures effectively.

Vulnerability Assessment

A detailed vulnerability and risk assessment mapped exposure to climate hazards such as landslides and droughts. This allowed the project to identify households most reliant on fragile forest ecosystems and provide targeted support.

Conflict Management

Conflicts often arose between villagers and forest authorities over resource use. The project established joint forest management committees, fostering dialogue, shared responsibilities, and trust between communities and government agencies.

Meeting Community Needs

By diversifying income sources through medicinal plant cultivation, eco-tourism initiatives, and improved water access the project strengthened livelihoods while reducing climate-related risks, fulfilling the community’s expectations for resilience and security.
