Bungoma Climate Change Impacts

One major climate change induced impact affecting my local community in Bungoma County is erratic rainfall patterns, characterized by prolonged dry spells followed by intense rainfall and flooding. Traditionally, Bungoma relied on predictable rainy seasons to support smallholder farming, especially maize, beans, and sugarcane. However, climate change has disrupted these patterns, leading to either delayed rains or heavy downpours that occur over short periods. In areas near River Nzoia and the Mt. Elgon slopes, intense rainfall has caused flooding, soil erosion, and occasional landslides.

These changes present significant challenges for community members and infrastructure. Farmers experience crop failure due to drought stress or waterlogging, which affects food security and household incomes. Flooding damages rural roads, making it difficult to transport farm produce to markets and access health and education services. In low-lying areas, homes are periodically flooded, increasing the risk of waterborne diseases such as cholera and typhoid. The loss of fertile topsoil due to erosion also reduces long-term agricultural productivity.

In response, the community has begun adapting through a mix of local initiatives and government-supported actions. Farmers are increasingly adopting climate-smart agriculture practices, such as early-maturing crop varieties, crop diversification, and soil conservation techniques like terracing and mulching. Tree planting initiatives, especially around Mt. Elgon, are helping reduce soil erosion and improve water retention. The county government, with support from national programs and development partners, has invested in flood control measures, rehabilitation of drainage systems, and farmer training on climate resilience. At the household level, some families are harvesting rainwater and adjusting planting calendars based on updated weather forecasts.

Overall, while climate change continues to pose serious risks to Bungoma County, growing awareness and adaptive responses are helping the community build resilience and protect livelihoods.
