Water Scarcity in Azad Kashmir: A Climate Change Impact

I have chosen water resources as the climate change issue affecting my community in Azad Kashmir, District Poonch, Pakistan.

Rainfall and snowfall are now shorter and come at the wrong seasons. This has lowered water levels, causing drinking water shortages and affecting agriculture. Wells now go as deep as 500 feet, and rivers flow less than before. We also have fewer natural springs than in the past.

The government has not taken serious action, but local people are building rainwater tanks at home and small mud dams in forests to help water soak into the land.

Rainwater harvesting systems can be put in place, along with tree planting and other vegetation. Strong advocacy for government support is also needed to promote and scale up these measures.
