Implications of Climate Change for the Mining Industry (South Africa)

Increased Energy Demand & Emissions

  • Rising temperatures increase underground heat in deep-level mines

  • Greater demand for ventilation and cooling systems

  • Increased electricity consumption (mostly coal-based in South Africa)

  • Higher greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from mining operations

  • Need for energy efficiency and renewable energy adoption

Water Management Challenges

Increased droughts reduce water availability for mining processes

Intense rainfall events increase flood risks at mine sites

Higher risk of acid mine drainage (AMD) and water pollution

Greater pressure to improve water reuse and recycling

Climate risks must be integrated into water use licences and planning

I am environmental student intern working at mining industry.
