A strong example of community-centered adaptation is Rwanda’s Green Gicumbi Climate Resilience Project. It was designed through a participatory approach where local residents, leaders, and vulnerable households identified their climate risks. The project focused on terracing, reforestation, climate-smart agriculture, and safer housing. It reflects community values by prioritizing land protection, livelihoods, and family security. It directly addressed soil erosion, crop loss, and landslide risks while assessing vulnerability and prioritizing the most at-risk households. Community participation helped prevent conflicts and ensured fair resource use. The project met community expectations by improving productivity, safety, and income while significantly strengthening the community’s long-term adaptive capacity.
