Climate Change Impact : Drought

Baidoa, Somalia, located in Southwest state of Somalia, an agricultural hub in Somalia faces severe climate change induced drought affecting the population. The prolonged droughts are due to irregular rainfall patterns witnessed over the last 3+ years leading to loss of livelihoods and pushing families into desperate situations within crowded camps where they struggle for basic water, food, and healthcare, exacerbated by conflict and funding gaps.

Specific challenges posed by drought include;

Crop failure and production losses;

Water scarcity.

Displacement

Hight malnutrition

Food insecurity

Community adaptation strategies;

Livelihood diversification - many families in Baidoa have opted to do small scale business to cushion the impact of drought and diversify their sources of livelihoods.

Proper water management - Rain water harvesting practices to have access to water during the dry conditions.

Community sharing and social networks - strong connection among the community has been strong source of support for those communities heavily impacted by the severe drought.
