Urban Heatwaves and Flooding: Climate Challenges in My Community
As i belong to Azad Jammu and Kashmir, In my community, climate change is increasingly felt through extreme heatwaves and urban flooding. Summers have become hotter and longer, putting children, the elderly, and outdoor workers at risk of heat-related illnesses. Frequent power outages make coping even harder.
During the monsoon, heavy rains often lead to flooded streets and homes, mainly because of poor drainage and unplanned urban growth. This disrupts daily life, damages property, and raises health risks like water-borne diseases.
So far, adaptation efforts include government heatwave alerts, public awareness campaigns, and some drainage improvements. At the community level, people are adjusting routines, planting trees, conserving water, and helping each other during floods.
These experiences show that human decisions can amplify climate risks, and addressing them requires better planning, stronger infrastructure, and active community involvement.
